Landscaping Stone Designs That May Make the House Look it’s Best
When you own a home, you want the exterior to appear just as good as the inside. This is why you notice lots of people on the weekends planting tons of plants and trying their best to create their yards appear amazing. However, the only problem is the fact that plenty of the good ideas for landscaping have previously been performed. Obviously, there is one thing that people used to forget about whenever it comes to landscaping, and it actually is one of the great things to work with, and that is stone. Landscaping stone ideas can, not only provide your yard a look all of its own, however at the same time, it will give your yard a fresh feel. There are so lots of various things that you can do with stone, it’s curious that more people do not utilize it. The possibilities are endless, and that stone is a best method to create every yard different.
To start with, you have to understand that stones, not only make an ideal walk way, but they create a good patio. Whenever people are using stones around their house, the main thing that they always do is utilize it for a walk way. Sure it’s a good idea, but it’s been played out to death. It’s time to come up with a fresh idea. Rather than just using it for a pathway, utilize it to build the ground of your patio. They make very flat stones that are perfect to be used as a floor. This will furnish your patio a very classy, yet, very outdoor feel. Another plan you may want to consider about using is using the stones to create levels to your floors. What you do is put down stones to build a wall (not a big wall, but a small one). Then behind the wall you fill it by dirt. Then you set your flowers. Behind those flowers you craft one more wall, but this time you build it a bit bigger. Then you fill that with dirt and you repeat as several times as you desire.
The finest idea for stones, however, is to apply them when making a pond in your plot. This is actually simple to do, and just about anybody can perform it over the course of just one weekend. Not only that, but the stones around it are going to give it an incredible look. If you add a little pump to the pond to create the pond have moving water, then it will keep things like mosquitoes out of it. There is no end to the amount of things that you can do with stones in your backyard. The great news is that the majority of it can be completed in a day, and stones (for the most part) do no cost that much to work with
Your new outdoor space looks incredible — and now you want to keep it that way!
At Premier Pavers, we love hearing from happy customers like Richard who recently got in touch to share how much he’s loving his new outdoor area using our Porcelain Range from premierpavers.nz.
One of the best features of our porcelain pavers is how low maintenance they are — but like all outdoor surfaces, they benefit from a little TLC from time to time. Here’s our simple guide on how to clean porcelain pavers and keep them looking pristine year after year.
🧹 Step 1: Start with a Simple Sweep
Before applying any cleaning solution, remove loose dirt, dust, leaves, or debris. A regular broom or outdoor blower will do the trick. This simple step helps prevent scratching and allows cleaning products to work more effectively.
💧 Step 2: Warm Soapy Water Works Wonders
Once the surface is clear, mix warm water with a mild dishwashing detergent (like Palmolive or Sunlight) and gently mop or scrub your porcelain pavers. This is often all you need to restore that fresh, clean look.
👉 Top Tip: Use a soft-bristle broom, mop, or sponge — never use anything too abrasive!
🧽 Step 3: Tackle Stubborn Stains with Care
If you notice more stubborn spots (like leaf stains, red wine, or flower buds), here’s what we recommend:
✅ Try a mild abrasive like baking soda.
Just sprinkle a little on the stain, scrub gently with warm water, and rinse thoroughly.
✅ For tougher stains, use a specialty cleaner like:
Wet and Forget “Double Bubble” House Wash – safe for porcelain and perfect for deeper cleaning.
⚠️ What to Avoid
Not all cleaning products are created equal. Avoid:
- Harsh chemical cleaners that may damage or discolour the pavers
- Abrasive scrubbers (e.g., steel wool or harsh pads)
- Products like Jif, which are too aggressive for porcelain surfaces
💡 Got a Real Nasty Stain?
If you’ve got a real doozy — like red wine, leaf staining, or organic debris that’s been left a bit too long — neat household bleach can work wonders. Just apply it carefully to the stained area, let it sit briefly, and rinse off with clean water.
Always test a small area first, and wear gloves!
🌱 Bonus: Keep It Fresh All Year with Annual Treatments
Once or twice a year, we recommend a quick, hassle-free treatment to prevent moss, mould, or algae:
🌿 Try:
Wet and Forget “Rapid Application” — simply spray and walk away. It’s perfect for ongoing protection and keeps your pavers looking new with zero scrubbing.

From Boring to Beautiful: Why Paving is the Future of Outdoor Design
When it comes to designing the perfect outdoor space, the choice between paving and poured concrete can make all the difference. While concrete has long been a go-to option for patios in New Zealand, paving offers superior benefits in aesthetics, durability, and overall value. Here’s why paving should be your top choice when creating a stunning and functional outdoor retreat:
1. Aesthetic Appeal That Elevates Your Space:
Paving stones come in a wide variety of colours, textures, and patterns, allowing you to create a customised and visually appealing patio. Whether you prefer a rustic, natural look or a sleek, modern design, pavers offer endless possibilities. You can create almost endless designs to make your patio unique to you. On the other hand, poured concrete is limited in design and requires expensive staining or stamping to achieve any level of customisation. Everyone else down the street has the same old boring, blotched, cracked poured concrete. Be the envy of your neighbourhood and friends. Create beautiful spaces for happy family times!
The flagstone look has been around for over 2,000 years and still hasn’t gone out of fashion! It is truly timeless.
Paving sizes range from the cobble look of 100x100mm to 230x115mm to 400x400mm, 542x270mm, 600x600mm, 450x450mm, 900x900mm, 1200x600mm, and many more, offering incredible flexibility in design and application.
2. Durability That Stands the Test of Time!
Poured concrete is prone to cracking over time due to weather changes, ground movement, and general wear and tear. Once a crack appears, it’s difficult to repair without leaving an unsightly patch. Paving stones, however, are individually set, allowing for slight movement without compromising the entire surface. This flexibility makes pavers much more resistant to cracking, ensuring your patio stays in top condition for years. If you experience any cracking of your grout lines, they are easy to repair whereas once concrete cracks your only option is to live with it or cut out and replace. The new concrete will never match the old either.
A very important point to bear in mind is that most patios will experience some ground movement or settlement over time. A lot of clay subsoils in New Zealand seem very hard but they do expand in the wet seasons and contract in the dry. This means that it is highly likely that your poured concrete patio will crack somewhere at some point and most often this happens away from the control joint so you end up with an ugly jagged crack.
Paving on the other hand will only crack along a grout line or two which is often not even noticeable. But if it does bug you, you can easily repair it with one of our resin based grouts!
Additionally, poured concrete fades over time, becomes blotchy, and often has an inconsistent texture. Once the thin fine surface wears away, it exposes the black aggregate underneath, which can make the patio look worn and unattractive. Furthermore, if you want to extend your patio in the future, adding to poured concrete can be a nightmare as each new batch will have a different colour, creating an inconsistent look.
Another major drawback of poured concrete is that it wears unevenly. High-traffic areas, whether from foot traffic or vehicles, will deteriorate much faster than lesser-used sections. This uneven wear leads to an unsightly and inconsistent surface that can make your patio look old and worn out much sooner than expected.
3. Easier Repairs & Maintenance!
One of the biggest drawbacks of poured concrete is that any damage or stains are difficult to fix without replacing large sections. Paving stones offer a major advantage in this area—if one stone gets damaged or stained, it can simply be replaced without disrupting the entire patio. Additionally, pavers are less likely to stain compared to concrete, making them a lower-maintenance option. You can also use a Premier sealer to seal your pavers if you choose to. And with our Porcelain paving there is no need to seal at all.
4. Slip-Resistance & Safety!
Safety is a key concern, especially for families with children or elderly members. Poured concrete can become dangerously slippery when wet, increasing the risk of slips and falls. Many paving stones have textured surfaces that provide better grip and traction, reducing the likelihood of accidents in wet conditions. Our Porcelain paving is specifically designed to be non-slip, ensuring maximum safety for your outdoor space.
5. Better Drainage & Water Management
Concrete is non-porous, meaning water tends to collect on the surface, leading to pooling and potential damage. Pavers are designed with joints that allow for better water drainage, preventing puddles from forming and reducing the risk of water damage to the patio foundation. A lot of our grouts are permeable too so if you have a permeable base, water can flow through the grout lines.
We also have fully permeable paving options available too if your council requires you to have a permeable driveway or patio or both.
6. Higher Resale Value
If you ever plan to sell your home, a well-designed paver patio can significantly increase its street appeal and resale value. Homebuyers appreciate the durability, aesthetics, and low maintenance of pavers, making it a worthwhile investment. In contrast, cracked or stained concrete patios can be seen as a costly problem that needs fixing. Even a multi million dollar home can be ruined by a poor quality driveway and patios.
7. Warranty & Long-Term Value
One of the biggest disadvantages of poured concrete is that it comes with no warranty at all. This means if it cracks, fades, or deteriorates, you’re left to cover the repair costs yourself. In contrast, our Premier Pavers Italia Range and Lifestyle Range both come with a 10-year warranty, ensuring peace of mind. Even more impressively, our Porcelain and other stone pavers come with a 100-year warranty, making them a true long-term investment for your home.
8. Superior Material Quality
Our Porcelain paving is designed to offer the ultimate outdoor flooring solution. It is non-slip, non-fading, stain-resistant, and engineered to replicate the beauty of expensive real stone. With many colours and textures to choose from, you can achieve the perfect aesthetic for your patio without the high cost and maintenance associated with natural stone.
9. Eco-Friendly & Sustainable
Pavers offer more environmentally friendly options than concrete. Permeable pavers allow rainwater to seep through the ground, reducing runoff and minimising the strain on local drainage systems. Some paving materials are even made from recycled materials, making them a sustainable choice for eco-conscious homeowners. All of our paving can be recycled too through our crushing plant or by reselling on platforms like Trademe. This means they have an endless lifecycle whereas poured concrete has to be trucked away to landfill.
10. Consistent Quality & Manufacturing Precision
All our paving is produced in a controlled factory environment, eliminating the variables that affect poured concrete when mixed and poured onsite. Factors such as temperature, moisture, wind, and shade can significantly impact the final quality of concrete, leading to inconsistencies in colour, texture, and durability. With factory-made paving, you get a consistently high-quality product that looks and performs exactly as intended every time.
The Clear Winner: Paving Over Poured Concrete
When considering all the factors—design flexibility, durability, ease of maintenance, safety, drainage, warranty, material quality, value, sustainability, and manufacturing precision—it’s clear that paving is the superior choice for your new patio. Not only does it enhance the beauty of your outdoor space, but it also ensures long-term performance and adds value to your property.
Paving is the way of the future for patios and driveways in New Zealand.
If you’re looking to create a patio that stands out and lasts for years to come, choose paving over poured concrete. Your future self will thank you!

The Cost of Traditional Decking: Why Kiwis Are Looking for Alternatives
If you’re planning a new deck but shocked by the skyrocketing prices, you’re not alone. Traditionally, Kiwis have loved timber decks—there’s something about the warmth of natural wood that makes an outdoor space feel inviting. However, with material and labour costs climbing higher each year, even the most basic timber decks are now costing a small fortune.
Let’s break down the numbers:
- Pine decking: One of the most affordable timber options, yet even this will set you back anywhere from $280 to $320 per m², supplied and installed.
- Kwila decking: A premium hardwood choice that many Kiwis love for its rich, warm colour—but be prepared to pay up to $500 per m²!
- Composite decking: Marketed as a “low-maintenance” alternative to natural timber, but the cost is staggering—some composite decks are now pushing $1,200 per m²!
With prices like these, it’s no wonder that more and more Kiwi homeowners are looking for a smarter, more affordable alternative.
A Stunning, Affordable Alternative: Porcelain Paving
At Premier Group NZ, we believe in helping homeowners get top-quality outdoor spaces without breaking the bank. We know how important it is to have a beautiful, functional deck area that enhances your home, without the stress of ongoing maintenance and high costs.
That’s why we’ve spent the last few years introducing thousands of homeowners, landscapers, and builders to the timeless beauty and practicality of porcelain paving—a solution that delivers a high-end look at a fraction of the cost of traditional decking.
What Are Porcelain Pavers?
Porcelain pavers are premium outdoor tiles that provide the perfect blend of beauty, durability, and affordability. Our pavers are:
✅ 600x600x20mm pavers – perfect for sleek, modern outdoor spaces.
✅ Slip-resistant – no more worrying about dangerous, slippery decks when it rains!
✅ Non-fading – unlike timber, which requires regular staining and maintenance.
✅ Extremely durable – so strong that we offer a 100-year warranty!
✅ Low maintenance – no need for water blasting, painting, or staining—just a simple clean now and then.
✅ Available in a huge range of colours and textures – whether you prefer a contemporary, modern look or a more natural aesthetic, there’s a porcelain paver to suit your style.
✅ Designed to replicate natural stone – get the luxurious look of travertine, granite, limestone, or even marble—at a fraction of the cost!
✅ Woodgrain-look porcelain available! – Love the look of timber but hate the maintenance? Our woodgrain-look porcelain pavers (1200mm x 300mm x 20mm) give you the warmth and charm of real wood without fading, rotting, or ongoing upkeep!
And the best part? Porcelain paving can be installed for as little as $200 per m² in many regions! That’s nearly half the cost of a timber deck.

When you look at the facts, timber decking simply can’t compete. Why invest in a deck that requires constant maintenance, fades over time, and could cost you thousands more, when you can have a stunning, durable, and low-maintenance alternative for half the price?
What About Installation?
One of the biggest concerns homeowners have when choosing an alternative to timber decking is installation. Fortunately, porcelain pavers are incredibly versatile and easy to install.
They can be laid on:
- A concrete base (for a super solid, long-lasting finish)
- A sand base (for more flexibility and drainage)
- Raised pedestal systems (a great option for creating a deck-like surface without the cost of timber framing)
With faster installation times, fewer structural requirements, and lower labour costs, porcelain paving is a clear winner when it comes to both materials and installation.
Why More Kiwis Are Making the Switch
Over the past few years, we’ve helped thousands of Kiwi homeowners ditch expensive, high-maintenance timber decking in favour of porcelain paving. Here’s what our customers love most:
- “It looks amazing and we don’t have to worry about it fading or getting slippery.”
- “Saved us thousands compared to a timber deck, and we love that it’s basically maintenance-free.”
- “We were sceptical at first, but now we’d never go back to wood!”
- “We absolutely love the woodgrain-look porcelain—it gives us the warm timber aesthetic we wanted but without the upkeep!”
The proof is in the results—more and more Kiwis are realizing that there’s a better way to build a deck.

Written By Bernard Powell – Landscaping Consultant
When it comes to upgrading your driveway, you’ve got two heavy hitters going toe-to-toe: concrete pavers and poured concrete. It’s like the ultimate driveway showdown, and you’re the referee. Which one wins? Well, that depends on your style, budget, and how much you’re willing to baby your driveway. Let’s dive into the details so you can make a choice that will leave you fist-pumping every time you pull into your home! 😊
The Heavyweight Contenders
In This Corner: Concrete Pavers
These beauties are the chameleons of driveways – stylish, versatile, and durable. With endless design possibilities, pavers are perfect for making your home’s entrance stand out.
Why People Love ‘Em:
- Looks That Kill: Pavers offer an incredible variety of colours, shapes, and patterns. Want a modern vibe? Done. Dreaming of a Mediterranean look? You’ve got it.
- Flexibility Is Key: Pavers are like the yoga masters of driveways. The small gaps between them allow for slight movement, so cracking is much less of a problem compared to poured concrete. (Goodbye, ugly crack lines!)
- Easy-Peasy Repairs: If a paver gets damaged, no sweat. Just pop it out and replace it. Try doing that with a giant slab of concrete!
- Underground Access Made Easy: Pavers make your life easy if you need to repair any pipes underground or if you want to install new pipes or irrigation. You can simply pull up a strip, do the work, and re-lay the pavers seamlessly – no one would ever know you were there! This is not possible with poured concrete.
- Built for the Long Haul: A properly installed paver driveway can last 30 to 50 years. That’s some serious value for your money.
- All-Weather Installation: Pavers can be installed in almost any weather, whereas poured concrete requires optimal conditions on the day of pouring.
- Colour Consistency: With pavers, you’ll get the exact colour you choose, no matter the conditions. Poured concrete, on the other hand, can vary in colour based on weather, temperature, and other factors during the day of pouring.
- Timeless Elegance: Pavers have a classy, timeless look that elevates your home’s street appeal. Most poured concrete jobs, while functional, often look cheaper in comparison.
- Controlled Quality: Because pavers are made in a factory, you get consistency in quality, colour, strength, and durability. Poured concrete, by contrast, is influenced by weather and site conditions, leading to variability in colour, texture and finished strength.
The Trade-Offs:
- Cost: All that style and flexibility come at a price. Pavers are usually more expensive upfront than poured concrete.
- Weed Drama: The joints between pavers can be a magnet for weeds if not maintained. Nobody wants a driveway jungle. To eliminate this drama, be sure to use Pavebond grout from Premier Pavers.
- Prep Work Matters: A poorly installed paver driveway can shift and become uneven over time. Solid groundwork is crucial here. To make sure the job is done right the first time, hire a Premier Approved Installer or follow our DIY videos and instructions carefully!
And in This Corner: Poured Concrete
Smooth, clean, and classic – poured concrete is the cost conscious consumers go-to. It’s a cost-effective option that gets the job done.
What are the Pro’s?
- Budget-Friendly: If you’re looking to save some cash, poured concrete is the more affordable choice.
- Streamlined Style: A poured concrete driveway gives you that seamless, polished look. For an extra touch of flair, you can opt for stamped or colored concrete.
- Low Maintenance: With no joints to worry about, there’s less chance of weeds popping up uninvited.
- Fast Installation: Poured concrete is quicker to install, so if time is tight, this could be your winner.
The Drawbacks:
- Crack Attack: Concrete’s biggest Achilles’ heel is cracking. Weather changes, ground shifts, and heavy loads can leave you with unsightly splits that are expensive to repair.
- Colour Variation: The weather on the day of pouring will have a big impact on the finished colour and most jobs are prone to blotching and a lot of colour variation.
- Uneven Wear Over Time: Poured concrete tends to wear out unevenly over time, especially in high-traffic areas. Pavers, made in a controlled environment, maintain their consistency and durability for decades.
- Repair Woes: Fixing a cracked slab isn’t easy, and the patches rarely match perfectly. That pristine look? Kiss it goodbye.
- Slippery When Wet: Unless textured, poured concrete can become a skating rink after rain. (Pro tip: Add a non-slip finish to avoid accidental driveway acrobatics.)
The Final Face-Off: Pavers vs. Poured
| Feature | Concrete Pavers | Poured Concrete |
| Cost | Higher initial cost | Lower initial cost |
| Durability | High; flexible joints resist cracking | Durable but prone to cracking |
| Aesthetic Options | Wide variety of patterns and colors | Limited, unless stamped/colored |
| Ease of Repair | Easy to replace individual pavers | Difficult; may require large patches |
| Installation Speed | Slower | Faster |
| Maintenance | Requires sealing and joint upkeep | Low, but cracks can be costly |
| Drainage | Permeable options available | Impermeable; needs drainage management |
| Lifespan | 30-50+ years with maintenance | 25-30 years with care |
So, Which One’s for You?
- Go with pavers if:
- You love customization and want a driveway that makes the neighbours jealous.
- You’re thinking long-term and willing to spend a little more upfront for a premium look and durability.
- You don’t mind occasional maintenance to keep it looking sharp.
- Choose poured concrete if:
- You’re on a tighter budget but still want a clean and classic driveway.
- You want something low-maintenance and don’t mind a simpler look.
- You need a driveway installed quickly.
Pro Tip: Make It Yours
Whatever you choose, remember: your driveway is the red carpet to your home. Whether you’re pulling up in a shiny new SUV or a trusty old ute, your driveway should make you smile every single time.
