Landscaping Stone Designs That May Make the House Look it’s Best
When you own a home, you want the exterior to appear just as good as the inside. This is why you notice lots of people on the weekends planting tons of plants and trying their best to create their yards appear amazing. However, the only problem is the fact that plenty of the good ideas for landscaping have previously been performed. Obviously, there is one thing that people used to forget about whenever it comes to landscaping, and it actually is one of the great things to work with, and that is stone. Landscaping stone ideas can, not only provide your yard a look all of its own, however at the same time, it will give your yard a fresh feel. There are so lots of various things that you can do with stone, it’s curious that more people do not utilize it. The possibilities are endless, and that stone is a best method to create every yard different.
To start with, you have to understand that stones, not only make an ideal walk way, but they create a good patio. Whenever people are using stones around their house, the main thing that they always do is utilize it for a walk way. Sure it’s a good idea, but it’s been played out to death. It’s time to come up with a fresh idea. Rather than just using it for a pathway, utilize it to build the ground of your patio. They make very flat stones that are perfect to be used as a floor. This will furnish your patio a very classy, yet, very outdoor feel. Another plan you may want to consider about using is using the stones to create levels to your floors. What you do is put down stones to build a wall (not a big wall, but a small one). Then behind the wall you fill it by dirt. Then you set your flowers. Behind those flowers you craft one more wall, but this time you build it a bit bigger. Then you fill that with dirt and you repeat as several times as you desire.
The finest idea for stones, however, is to apply them when making a pond in your plot. This is actually simple to do, and just about anybody can perform it over the course of just one weekend. Not only that, but the stones around it are going to give it an incredible look. If you add a little pump to the pond to create the pond have moving water, then it will keep things like mosquitoes out of it. There is no end to the amount of things that you can do with stones in your backyard. The great news is that the majority of it can be completed in a day, and stones (for the most part) do no cost that much to work with

Your new outdoor space looks incredible — and now you want to keep it that way!
At Premier Pavers, we love hearing from happy customers like Richard who recently got in touch to share how much he’s loving his new outdoor area using our Porcelain Range from premierpavers.nz.
One of the best features of our porcelain pavers is how low maintenance they are — but like all outdoor surfaces, they benefit from a little TLC from time to time. Here’s our simple guide on how to clean porcelain pavers and keep them looking pristine year after year.
🧹 Step 1: Start with a Simple Sweep
Before applying any cleaning solution, remove loose dirt, dust, leaves, or debris. A regular broom or outdoor blower will do the trick. This simple step helps prevent scratching and allows cleaning products to work more effectively.
💧 Step 2: Warm Soapy Water Works Wonders
Once the surface is clear, mix warm water with a mild dishwashing detergent (like Palmolive or Sunlight) and gently mop or scrub your porcelain pavers. This is often all you need to restore that fresh, clean look.
👉 Top Tip: Use a soft-bristle broom, mop, or sponge — never use anything too abrasive!
🧽 Step 3: Tackle Stubborn Stains with Care
If you notice more stubborn spots (like leaf stains, red wine, or flower buds), here’s what we recommend:
✅ Try a mild abrasive like baking soda.
Just sprinkle a little on the stain, scrub gently with warm water, and rinse thoroughly.
✅ For tougher stains, use a specialty cleaner like:
Wet and Forget “Double Bubble” House Wash – safe for porcelain and perfect for deeper cleaning.
⚠️ What to Avoid
Not all cleaning products are created equal. Avoid:
- Harsh chemical cleaners that may damage or discolour the pavers
- Abrasive scrubbers (e.g., steel wool or harsh pads)
- Products like Jif, which are too aggressive for porcelain surfaces
💡 Got a Real Nasty Stain?
If you’ve got a real doozy — like red wine, leaf staining, or organic debris that’s been left a bit too long — neat household bleach can work wonders. Just apply it carefully to the stained area, let it sit briefly, and rinse off with clean water.
Always test a small area first, and wear gloves!
🌱 Bonus: Keep It Fresh All Year with Annual Treatments
Once or twice a year, we recommend a quick, hassle-free treatment to prevent moss, mould, or algae:
🌿 Try:
Wet and Forget “Rapid Application” — simply spray and walk away. It’s perfect for ongoing protection and keeps your pavers looking new with zero scrubbing.

Give Your New or Old Bricks a Fresh, Rustic Vibe with This DIY Game-Changer
Keen to create that earthy, lived-in look that’s full of charm and character? A bagged finish is a seriously underrated way to transform your brickwork—and the best part? You can do it yourself!
Whether you’re working on a brand-new build or want to breathe fresh life into tired, old bricks, this technique is simple, affordable, and super effective.
🧱 What’s a Bagged Finish Anyway?
A bagged finish (also called “bagging”) is where you apply a light mortar mix over your bricks using a hessian sack, sponge, or cloth. It gives that beautiful, raw, and rustic texture—kind of like a halfway point between paint and full render.
You still get to see the brick’s personality coming through, but with a softer, weathered vibe.
💥 Why Bagging is a Winner
✅ Looks epic on new or old bricks
✅ Easy DIY with minimal gear
✅ Budget-friendly makeover
✅ You control how rustic or refined it looks
✅ Adds instant street appeal and texture
🔧 What You’ll Need
- Cement + sand mix (6:1 ratio) or pre-mixed mortar
- Water
- Bucket
- Hessian sack, sponge, or cloth
- Gloves, goggles, mask
- Stiff brush (for prep)
- Drop sheets or tape to protect surfaces
- Optional: bonding agent or oxide tints for custom colour
🔨 How to Bag Your Bricks (Like a Pro)
- Clean It Up
Scrub your bricks down—no dust, dirt, or flaky bits. A stiff brush or pressure washer works wonders. - Mix It Right
Your mix should be thick and sludgy—like porridge. Add a bonding agent if you’re working on older bricks for better grip. - Test Before You Go Wild
Do a little patch first to see how it dries. Tweak your mix until you’re loving the look. - Get Bagging!
Dip your sack or sponge into the mix and start rubbing it on. Circular, patchy, or smooth—it’s your call! Go light for a vintage feel or heavy for a bolder, creamy texture. - Leave It or Smooth It
Want it rough and raw? Leave it. Want a cleaner look? Lightly smooth it out with a sponge or trowel. - Let It Cure
Give it a few days to dry properly—especially if it’s damp or chilly. Keep the area dry while it sets.
🎨 Hot Tip: Add a Colour Twist
Mix in some oxides or go with a lime wash for a unique colour tone. White, off-white, or warm greys look stunning.
🏡 Real Talk from Premier Brick Customers
We’ve seen our Vintage Bricks absolutely pop with a bagged finish. It’s a clever way to blend old-school charm with modern vibes—and it works just as well on a sleek new build as it does on a reno.

If you’re looking for a modern, stylish, and timeless brick colour for your new home, Iron Stone from our Premier Brick range is a standout choice.
What Makes Iron Stone Special?
Iron Stone is a mid-grey brick that delivers a sleek and contemporary look. Whether you’re building a new home or enhancing an architectural project, this colour pairs beautifully with a range of design styles—from modern minimalism to industrial chic.
But what truly makes Iron Stone shine is how it looks when paired with our charcoal bagged mortar. This combination creates a subtle contrast that enhances the depth and texture of the brickwork, resulting in a finish that’s both sophisticated and bold.
Important Laying Notes
To get the best results with Iron Stone, it must be laid using our charcoal mortar. Why?
Using charcoal mortar helps:
✅ Reduce the risk of mortar staining on the face of the brick
✅ Ensure a consistent and clean finish
✅ Make the bricklayer’s job easier and more efficient
It’s a smart choice that sets your build up for long-term success.
What About Efflorescence?
You might notice, in some cases, a white or lighter stain appearing on the brick or mortar after laying. This is called efflorescence—a completely natural phenomenon where salts migrate to the surface as moisture evaporates.
Here’s what you need to know:
- It’s not a fault or defect in the brick or mortar
- In many cases, it’s barely visible or never appears at all
- If it does show up, it usually weathers away over time
- You can choose to gently scrub or wash it off if desired
Efflorescence is a normal part of the curing and drying process, especially with masonry products, and has no impact on the structural integrity or long-term appearance of your brickwork.
How to Remove Efflorescence
🧼 Simple and safe ways to clean:
- Wait until the bricks are completely dry
- Sweep the area with a dry, stiff-bristled broom
- For stubborn spots, apply a vinegar and water solution (1 part vinegar to 10 parts water), scrub gently, and rinse
- Avoid high-pressure washing, which may drive salts deeper into the surface
Colour Pairing Suggestions
🎨 Popular Colour Combinations with Iron Stone:
- Roof: Ebony, Ironsand, Grey Friars
- Joinery: Matt Black, Arctic White, or Silver Pearl
- Cladding Accents: Cedar, black vertical shiplap, or dark-stained timber
- Landscaping: Concrete pavers, basalt stones, dark mulch, or white pebble contrast
Designer’s Insight:
“Iron Stone creates a bold yet refined base palette. Pair it with natural textures for warmth, or bold contrast for a modern edge.”
Ongoing Maintenance Tips
🏠 Keep your Iron Stone looking sharp for years:
- Gently hose your brickwork every 6–12 months to remove dust, dirt, and pollen
- Avoid using harsh chemicals or pressure washers
- Inspect mortar joints every 2–3 years and re-point if needed
- Position garden beds and irrigation systems to prevent direct water spray on the bricks
Final Thoughts
Iron Stone is one of our most eye-catching and popular choices for a reason. With its rich grey tones and smooth finish, it offers a beautiful backdrop for a wide range of home styles. And when laid with our charcoal bagged mortar, you get a combination that’s hard to beat.

FAQs
Q: Can Iron Stone be used in coastal areas?
A: Yes! It performs well in coastal environments when laid with the correct mortar and proper techniques.
Q: Will the colour of the brick change over time?
A: No, the base colour is permanent. Any white staining you may see is temporary efflorescence and will fade or can be cleaned.
Q: Can I use standard grey mortar instead of charcoal?
A: No this is not an option. Use the Premier bagged charcoal mortar to reduce the risk of staining and to maintain the intended aesthetic.

Thinking of limewashing your brick home? Whether you’re going for timeless elegance, rustic charm, or a soft Mediterranean vibe, limewash is an incredible way to enhance your Premier Brick and transform the look of your home.
This guide has everything you need—what limewash is, why it’s amazing, how to apply it, maintain it, and where to get it right here in New Zealand.
🧱 What is Limewashed Brick?
Limewashed brick is created by applying a thin coat of slaked lime and water to the surface of brick. Unlike paint, limewash penetrates porous brick and mortar and chemically bonds with the surface through a process called carbonation, giving it a soft, chalky finish that’s breathable and natural.
Think: European farmhouse, Tuscan villa, or modern rustic retreat.
✨ Why Choose Limewash?
Here’s why homeowners and designers are loving it:
✅ Breathable – Won’t trap moisture like paint
✅ Eco-Friendly – Made from natural lime and water
✅ Antimicrobial – Naturally resists mould and bacteria
✅ Beautifully Aged Look – Develops character over time
✅ Easily Customisable – Apply sheer or solid, distress or recoat
✅ Easy Touch-ups – Blends well for future refreshes
⚖️ Limewash vs Paint: Pros & Cons
| Feature | Limewash | Paint |
| Look | Soft, matte, natural | Opaque, more artificial |
| Breathability | Yes (great for old homes) | No (can trap moisture) |
| Durability | 5–7 years, touch-up friendly | 10+ years, harder to touch up |
| Application Surface | Needs raw, porous brick | Can go over most surfaces |
| Maintenance | Light & easy | More involved |
| Cost | Lower for DIY, moderate with pros | Moderate to high depending on paint |
🛠️ How to Apply Limewash to Premier Brick (Step-by-Step)
1️ Prepare the Surface
- Clean the bricks with water and a brush—remove dirt, grease, and debris.
- Ensure the bricks are unsealed and porous (limewash won’t stick to painted or sealed surfaces).
- Cover nearby surfaces with plastic drop cloths and tape.
2️ Dampen the Bricks
- Mist with a spray bottle or hose—this slows the drying so the limewash penetrates evenly and doesn’t crack.
3️ Mix the Limewash
- Pre-mixed (e.g. Porter’s, Romabio): Follow product instructions for dilution.
- DIY Mix: 1 part hydrated lime (builders lime) to 1.5 parts water. Adjust for desired thickness.
- Stir well—aim for milk-like consistency.
4️ Apply the Limewash
- Use a masonry brush (not a roller) and work in sections.
- Apply with light, crisscross strokes—don’t over-brush.
- Keep a wet edge to avoid lap marks.
5️ Optional Distressing
- After 10–60 minutes (when slightly tacky), use a damp sponge or cloth to remove some limewash for that worn, rustic look.
6️ Let It Dry
- Fully cures over 2–3 days.
- It will lighten as it dries—don’t panic if it looks darker at first!
7️ Add More Coats (Optional)
- Want more coverage? Add a second coat once the first is dry. You can go from transparent to full whiteout depending on your vision.

👷 Should You DIY or Hire a Pro?
✅ DIY is great if:
- You’re tackling a small area (like a fireplace or garden wall).
- You enjoy hands-on weekend projects.
- You like the idea of a wabi-sabi, slightly imperfect finish.
👷♂️ Hire a pro if:
- You’re doing a full exterior or large space.
- You want an even, clean application.
- Your home is high-set or needs scaffolding.
Who can apply limewash?
- ✅ Painting Contractors (check if they’ve done limewash before)
- ✅ Special Finishers (e.g. Special Finishes NZ)
- ✅ Heritage Restoration Experts
Tip: Ask for photos of previous limewash work and request a test patch before they start the full job.

🧼 How to Maintain Limewashed Bricks
✅ Do:
- Gently hose off dust or cobwebs
- Use soft brushes—no pressure washing
- Keep some product for future touch-ups
- Spot refresh faded areas every few years
❌ Don’t:
- Use harsh detergents or chemical cleaners
- Worry if it weathers a bit—it adds character!

From Boring to Beautiful: Why Paving is the Future of Outdoor Design
When it comes to designing the perfect outdoor space, the choice between paving and poured concrete can make all the difference. While concrete has long been a go-to option for patios in New Zealand, paving offers superior benefits in aesthetics, durability, and overall value. Here’s why paving should be your top choice when creating a stunning and functional outdoor retreat:
1. Aesthetic Appeal That Elevates Your Space:
Paving stones come in a wide variety of colours, textures, and patterns, allowing you to create a customised and visually appealing patio. Whether you prefer a rustic, natural look or a sleek, modern design, pavers offer endless possibilities. You can create almost endless designs to make your patio unique to you. On the other hand, poured concrete is limited in design and requires expensive staining or stamping to achieve any level of customisation. Everyone else down the street has the same old boring, blotched, cracked poured concrete. Be the envy of your neighbourhood and friends. Create beautiful spaces for happy family times!
The flagstone look has been around for over 2,000 years and still hasn’t gone out of fashion! It is truly timeless.
Paving sizes range from the cobble look of 100x100mm to 230x115mm to 400x400mm, 542x270mm, 600x600mm, 450x450mm, 900x900mm, 1200x600mm, and many more, offering incredible flexibility in design and application.
2. Durability That Stands the Test of Time!
Poured concrete is prone to cracking over time due to weather changes, ground movement, and general wear and tear. Once a crack appears, it’s difficult to repair without leaving an unsightly patch. Paving stones, however, are individually set, allowing for slight movement without compromising the entire surface. This flexibility makes pavers much more resistant to cracking, ensuring your patio stays in top condition for years. If you experience any cracking of your grout lines, they are easy to repair whereas once concrete cracks your only option is to live with it or cut out and replace. The new concrete will never match the old either.
A very important point to bear in mind is that most patios will experience some ground movement or settlement over time. A lot of clay subsoils in New Zealand seem very hard but they do expand in the wet seasons and contract in the dry. This means that it is highly likely that your poured concrete patio will crack somewhere at some point and most often this happens away from the control joint so you end up with an ugly jagged crack.
Paving on the other hand will only crack along a grout line or two which is often not even noticeable. But if it does bug you, you can easily repair it with one of our resin based grouts!
Additionally, poured concrete fades over time, becomes blotchy, and often has an inconsistent texture. Once the thin fine surface wears away, it exposes the black aggregate underneath, which can make the patio look worn and unattractive. Furthermore, if you want to extend your patio in the future, adding to poured concrete can be a nightmare as each new batch will have a different colour, creating an inconsistent look.
Another major drawback of poured concrete is that it wears unevenly. High-traffic areas, whether from foot traffic or vehicles, will deteriorate much faster than lesser-used sections. This uneven wear leads to an unsightly and inconsistent surface that can make your patio look old and worn out much sooner than expected.
3. Easier Repairs & Maintenance!
One of the biggest drawbacks of poured concrete is that any damage or stains are difficult to fix without replacing large sections. Paving stones offer a major advantage in this area—if one stone gets damaged or stained, it can simply be replaced without disrupting the entire patio. Additionally, pavers are less likely to stain compared to concrete, making them a lower-maintenance option. You can also use a Premier sealer to seal your pavers if you choose to. And with our Porcelain paving there is no need to seal at all.
4. Slip-Resistance & Safety!
Safety is a key concern, especially for families with children or elderly members. Poured concrete can become dangerously slippery when wet, increasing the risk of slips and falls. Many paving stones have textured surfaces that provide better grip and traction, reducing the likelihood of accidents in wet conditions. Our Porcelain paving is specifically designed to be non-slip, ensuring maximum safety for your outdoor space.
5. Better Drainage & Water Management
Concrete is non-porous, meaning water tends to collect on the surface, leading to pooling and potential damage. Pavers are designed with joints that allow for better water drainage, preventing puddles from forming and reducing the risk of water damage to the patio foundation. A lot of our grouts are permeable too so if you have a permeable base, water can flow through the grout lines.
We also have fully permeable paving options available too if your council requires you to have a permeable driveway or patio or both.
6. Higher Resale Value
If you ever plan to sell your home, a well-designed paver patio can significantly increase its street appeal and resale value. Homebuyers appreciate the durability, aesthetics, and low maintenance of pavers, making it a worthwhile investment. In contrast, cracked or stained concrete patios can be seen as a costly problem that needs fixing. Even a multi million dollar home can be ruined by a poor quality driveway and patios.
7. Warranty & Long-Term Value
One of the biggest disadvantages of poured concrete is that it comes with no warranty at all. This means if it cracks, fades, or deteriorates, you’re left to cover the repair costs yourself. In contrast, our Premier Pavers Italia Range and Lifestyle Range both come with a 10-year warranty, ensuring peace of mind. Even more impressively, our Porcelain and other stone pavers come with a 100-year warranty, making them a true long-term investment for your home.
8. Superior Material Quality
Our Porcelain paving is designed to offer the ultimate outdoor flooring solution. It is non-slip, non-fading, stain-resistant, and engineered to replicate the beauty of expensive real stone. With many colours and textures to choose from, you can achieve the perfect aesthetic for your patio without the high cost and maintenance associated with natural stone.
9. Eco-Friendly & Sustainable
Pavers offer more environmentally friendly options than concrete. Permeable pavers allow rainwater to seep through the ground, reducing runoff and minimising the strain on local drainage systems. Some paving materials are even made from recycled materials, making them a sustainable choice for eco-conscious homeowners. All of our paving can be recycled too through our crushing plant or by reselling on platforms like Trademe. This means they have an endless lifecycle whereas poured concrete has to be trucked away to landfill.
10. Consistent Quality & Manufacturing Precision
All our paving is produced in a controlled factory environment, eliminating the variables that affect poured concrete when mixed and poured onsite. Factors such as temperature, moisture, wind, and shade can significantly impact the final quality of concrete, leading to inconsistencies in colour, texture, and durability. With factory-made paving, you get a consistently high-quality product that looks and performs exactly as intended every time.
The Clear Winner: Paving Over Poured Concrete
When considering all the factors—design flexibility, durability, ease of maintenance, safety, drainage, warranty, material quality, value, sustainability, and manufacturing precision—it’s clear that paving is the superior choice for your new patio. Not only does it enhance the beauty of your outdoor space, but it also ensures long-term performance and adds value to your property.
Paving is the way of the future for patios and driveways in New Zealand.
If you’re looking to create a patio that stands out and lasts for years to come, choose paving over poured concrete. Your future self will thank you!
